The Twining project “Air quality improvement” was the first Twining project in the area of environment in the Republic of Macedonia. Within this project the twining partner was Finland represented by the Finnish meteorological institute (FMI) and the junior partner was Austria represented by the Environment Agency Austria (Umweltbundesamt). The project duration was 18 months. It started at 01.09.2006 and it was finalized at 15.05.2008.  The overall purpose of the project was to improve air quality in the country.  The project had five components: 1-Guidelines and Secondary Legislation, 2-Emission Inventories, 3-Preliminary Environmental Assessment, 4-Air Quality Measurements and Laboratory Work and 5-Dispersion Modelling. Twining project

Twining project  “Strengthening the central and local level capacities for environmental management in the area of air quality”. The second Twinning project ‘Strengthening the central and local level capacities for environmental management in the area of air quality’ aims to improve the air quality administration. It continues the work and builds on the achievements of the air quality improvement Twinning project finished in 2008. The project is jointly carried out by the Finnish Meteorological Institute, Environment Agency Austria and Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea. The main beneficiary organisation is the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning. The project duration is 24 months (September 2010-August 2012) with a budget of 1 million EUR. The project has 3 Components: 1-Legislative development, 2-Strenthening the administrative capacity to implement the ambient air quality legislation and 3-Stremghtening the administrative capacity for air quality measurement, monitoring and reporting. Twinning project – Strengthening the central and local level capacities for environmental management in the area of air quality

The“Implementation and ratification of the Heavy Metals Protocol, POPs Protocol and the Gothenburg protocol”project aimed to assist the Western Balkan countries to ratify the mentioned protocols and implement some of their requirements through the preparation of the National action plans

The project was coordinated by UNECE and finances for each of the countries were allocated by the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The project lasted from 16.10.2009 until 05.09.2012 with implementation of the project activities in two phases: First (elaboration) and second (implementation) phase. It should be mentioned that only,the Republic of Macedonia from all participating countries,succeeded in accomplishing all foreseen activities in the two phases of the project.

During the first phase of the project, the National action plan for ratification and implementation of the Heavy Metals Protocol, the POPs Protocol and the Gothenburg protocol.

During thesecond phase of the project the Laws for ratification of the protocols (Official Gazette of the Republic of Macedonia 135/2010) were adopted, and the National emission reduction plan, the Inventory report for 2010  and the CORINAIR inventory with heavy metals data (see more in the page inventories), heavy metals measurements, the National air quality protection plan and the Final project report were prepared.
